Severn Hospice

Who are Severn Hospice?

Severn Hospice gives specialist care and support free of charge to families across Shropshire and North Powys who are living with an incurable illness. Started in 1989, The Hospice employs 179 nurses working across 2 main sites in Shrewsbury and Telford and giving care at home to over 27,000 people since it opened. They have 24 in-patient beds and are part funded by the NHS and charitable donations – it costs over £10m per annum to operate the Severn Hospice.

What were the problems & challenges they faced?

Just over 10 years ago the Hospice built a brand new site in Apley, Telford. The Hospice had only one elderly operative who could not cope with the size of the new site, the CQC regulations and the frequency of service, so outsourcing seemed the logical answer. Prime Facility Services responded to a tender and were awarded the contract on the basis of:

  • The mobilisation and training of reliable, hardworking, DBS checked staff
  • The delivery of a consistent service to CQC standards
  • Meeting a wide range of customer needs
  • Collecting and sharing feedback from staff at the Hospice
  • Working safely and controlling infection
  • Minimising environmental impact

What services does Prime Facility Services deliver?

  • All communal are and ward cleaning
  • All window cleaning
  • Gutter cleaning
  • Carpet & upholstery cleaning
  • Deep cleaning
  • Body spill cleaning

Severn Hospice and Prime have agreed on a set of Key Performance Indicators and many of these are monitored using mobile devices. The data, information and images captured on these devices form the basis for regular service reviews.

Why were Prime successful?

Prime Facility Services were successful because they could demonstrate total commitment to the customer from the Managing Director to the cleaning operatives and had a track record of success and customer testimonials to evidence their method statements.

What has Severn Hospice achieved?

Severn Hospice has achieved better value for money, cleaner buildings and a consistent service for their patients and staff, removed a number of under-performing contractors, reduced their supplier base, streamlined billing and payment systems and improved the conditions for hundreds of people who visit the Hospice every year.
